What is Maker Faire?
A global celebration of invention, creativity and hands-on learning.
Since its launch in the Bay Area in 2006, Maker Faire has grown into a network of more than 200 licensed events across 40-plus countries, including 30-plus Featured Faires each year. Its two flagship editions in the United States draw over 200,000 visitors annually.
Maker Faire Kochi is built collectively by TinkerHub Foundation, MakerGram and Kerala Startup Mission, giving Kerala’s labs, campuses and maker communities a shared public stage.

Why Kochi, why now
Kerala has the infrastructure for a thriving maker ecosystem. What it lacks is a public stage.
98 Fab Foundation network labs in India, 25 to 30 of them in Kerala
The state is home to roughly 25 to 30 of India’s 98 Fab Foundation network labs, 369 Atal Tinkering Labs and 28 Centres for Early Innovation, with 70 more planned. Kochi, Kerala’s innovation and startup hub, is the natural place to bring that work into public view.
Each January to March, the Kerala Literature Festival and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale draw visitors from across the world. Maker Faire Kochi adds technology and making to that season.
The mission

To build a lasting maker culture in Kerala.
Maker Faire Kochi celebrates learning by building. It gives makers, students and hobbyists a reason to finish projects and share them, and connects a pathway from first workshop to incubation, Fab Academy and industry.

Where are the makers?
In Fab Labs, tinkering labs, campus chapters, startups and home workshops. Makers work across every discipline, from electronics and robotics to textiles, food and craft.
Technology is one part of making. Projects in wood, thread, clay, coir and food are equally welcome.
Robotics & AI
Walking, rolling and balancing machines, and the code that steers them.

Looms, handloom, embroidery and clothes that light up.
Electronics & IoT
Boards, sensors and soldering irons: things that blink, beep and talk.
See it drawn belowCooking & Fermenting
Kitchen science: pickles, ferments and food made by experiment.
3D Printing
Printers, prints and the people who tune them.
Repair & Restoration
Fixing instead of replacing: radios, bicycles, clocks.
Pottery & Clay
Wheels, kilns and hand-built forms.
Music & Instruments
Instruments built, hacked and played; synths and noise machines.

Solar, compost, water and growing things.
Science & Space
Telescopes, rockets, weather stations and backyard experiments.
Woodwork & Joinery
Not every maker works in code. Wood, edge tools and patience: the oldest kind of making on the faire floor.
Cut to the line
The saw rips down the board along a pencil line, its teeth working deeper into the cut with every push.
True the face
The plane takes shavings off until the board is flat and square.
Cut the joint
Mallet and chisel chop a mortise for each leg to sit in.
A stool
Four legs, the rails and a seat: every part made at this bench, shown here pulled apart.

A carpenter at the bench: saw, plane, mallet and chisel, and a stool in exploded view.
Electronics & IoT
The bench
A maker's electronics bench: tools along the top, a silicone mat in front where the small work happens.
Soldering iron
A temperature-controlled iron melts solder into each joint, joining a part's lead to the copper pad.
Single-board computer
A credit-card-sized computer whose 40-pin header switches the LEDs, reads the button and drives the servo.
Breadboard
Holes connected in strips let parts be wired up and changed without any solder.

Electronics & IoT: a maker at the bench, soldering a single-board computer to a breadboard of LEDs, a button, a buzzer and a servo.
Make some noise
For the ones who can’t leave it alone.
Music and instruments, art and illustration: the loud, colourful side of making.
The noise machine here is playable. Hold the pointer down over it and move to change the pitch, drag its knobs, and watch the plotter turn what you play into a drawing.

A noise machine and a pen plotter. Sound in, drawing out.
